FIR DIL DO HOCKEY KO?

What is our national sport? When this question is asked by a teacher in a class all students reply frequently-its HOCKEY teacher. Yes Hockey is our national game, our pride is Hockey, The country who has won 8 gold in Olympics, it’s national game is Hockey. But reality is something different. In practical our national game is CRICKET. We all love it, we all live it, and we all enjoy it. In India you can ask anything about any cricket player to anyone and he/she will give you the answer that you had expected. They know Nawab patodi to Rohit sharma and also Bradman to Shane Watson. But when you ask about hockey they hardly know about major Dhyanchand.
Last month Hockey world cup was held in India. Before it all T.V channels were broadcasting advertisements to promote it, not actually for promoting it but for attracting at least minimum people to come to the stadium. Here I would like to mention one famous add. in which the punch line was-Fir dil do hockey ko ! Doesn’t seem it quite strange that our national game is hockey and we are appealing in a way-FIR DIL…. That means we have forgotten Hockey. Yes we have forgotten it but by these adds we cant grow up Hockey again. I am not saying that Cricket is the reason for Hockey’s failure because cricket has make it’s own way. the reason for Hockey’s failures is our Govt.’s policies and it’s attitude towards Hockey. When a cricket player is getting 3-5 crore for an advertisement on the other hand a hockey player is fighting for his match fee. Hockey team is fighting for basic necessities like good accommodation, sport kits, fees and fooding. in short hockey is fighting for its status in India. In such condition who would like to join our Hockey team and who would like to watch such players on ground who are fighting for their basic rights.
But we can do at least one thing keeping Hockey in our heart and watching Hockey matches in stadium so that it will get some popularity that it really deserves.
